logs: Grand Canyon Rafting

Day 1-Saturday, June 28
We woke up around 5, finished packing, and checked our bags with the hotel. We left on the bus at 6, and there were fruit juices and muffins/donuts for breakfast. We just passed Nellis AFB. We passed through Gorge (7:42) and are climbing. After clipping through a corner of Arizona we entered Utah at 7:55 (by Las Vegas time). After a stop in Hurricane, Utah (near Zion), we saw some ostriches. We got to Arizona at 9:04 (Las Vegas time). We got to the Fredonia warehouse at 9:33, somebody's time. We had sandwiches for lunch, and I got a T-shirt. Now we are on the Kaibab and can see the plateau Bryce is on and the Aquarius plateau. Now we are coming down and can see the river going through Marble Canyon. We just stopped at Marble Canyon Trading Post our last stop before the boats and the canyon. We got to the put-in, Lees Ferry, at 11:50. The water is very cold. We left at about 12:30. We just went under the Navaho bridges, and the canyon walls continue to climb. The first two rapids were Badger and Soap Creek, Soap Creek being the larger, but both were one-handers. The next rapid, a small one, was Sheer Wall. The air temperature really is not that bad. Kent got tired of sitting in the front getting wet, but Gary is still toughing it out. The next set of rapids was House Rock. This was followed by North Canyon and 21 Mile. North Canyon was the largest yet, and everyone got quite wet. We pulled over to stop (mile 22.5) at about 3:30, earlier than normal. We had halibut for dinner, and I chopped the lemons. After dinner, Matt caught a fish. After talking for awhile, I decided to go to bed at about 8:20. It is getting dark and there isn't much to do after dark. Kent certainly agrees; he doesn't like to talk, and he can't see well enough to build his sand castles anymore. We also saw several bats flying pretty low over us. I woke up a few times during the night, and the stars were very pretty, very bright. I could not look at them for long because the sand was going everywhere, including my eyes.

Redwall CavernDay 2-Sunday, June 29
I woke up at about 4:45, Bill was already cooking breakfast. For breakfast, we had scrambled eggs, sausage, grapefruit, and cinnamon buns. It was pretty good. Then I finished packing my sleeping bag, air mattress, and tarp/ground cloth. The first rapid of the morning was 23 mile. This was followed by four rapids near each other: 24 mile, 24 ½ mile, 25 mile, and Cave Springs rapids. Now we can see the redwall limestone, which is red only because it was stained by the hermit shale. Then we ran 27 mile rapids. The one after that was 29 mile, another small one. Now we are stopped to look at some Anasazi ruins. We saw house ruins, pottery shards, and petroglyphs. We also saw a tunnel that we could look through to see South Canyon. It was narrow and about ten feet long. Now we can see Vasey's Paradise. Now we are stopped at Redwall Cavern, which is a low, amphitheater shaped cavern that goes back very far. This is also near a spot were they had at one time planned to build a dam.

After that, we stopped to take a hike up a narrow side canyon to see some nautaloid fossils. The hike involved a lot of rock scrambling, and some of the fossils were two feet long. The next rapid was 36 mile. We also saw the Bridge of Sighs, a natural bridge. We stopped for lunch (mile 39) at about 11:40. After lunch, we tried to feed and catch ant lions. We left at about 1. Now we are stopped to walk to an alcove. After walking up a side canyon, we reached a giant bowl, with plants and some water. It was like a lost paradise-totally different from the main canyon. Before we left, we had a water fight, and almost everybody got a bucket or two of water on them. The next rapid, a massive rock in the middle of the river, was Harding. Then we stopped, at 3:15, to take a side hike up Saddle Canyon (mile 47). Toward the end, the canyon got very narrow and we had to wade. Right before we got to the waterfall, we have to climb up a 6-7 foot cliff with water coming down it. The pool was small, but warmer than the river. When we got back down, around 5:40, we found out that Bill had decided to stay there. We had spaghetti, salad, and garlic bread for dinner. Before dinner, we had been demonstrating Kent's ability to laugh at anything. The bats are out again, and Kent saw a snake-he says it was a rattler. We have also seen several lizards, some are common Indian Lizards (Gray/Brown with a bright green underbelly), but we have also seen some larger, greenish brown ones with red heads. I went to bed at about 8:30.
